The garage is a great place to store athletic equipment, bikes, lawn toys, car washing stuff, and gardening tools. But it’s not the best place to store everything. Here are eight items you should never keep in the garage:

  1. Fireworks: Storing fireworks in the garage is a fire hazard. They should be kept in a cool, dry place away from any potential sparks.
  2. Books: Books can attract silverfish, which thrive in dark, damp environments and feed on the starchy glue that binds books.
  3. Firewood: Firewood stored in the garage can become a magnet for pests, including termites and rodents. Keep it outside, covered, and off the ground.
  4. Propane Tanks: Propane tanks can leak, and in an enclosed space like a garage, even a small spark from starting your car could ignite a fire.
  5. Wine: Wine is sensitive to temperature fluctuations, which can spoil the taste. Store it in a temperature-controlled environment.
  6. Paint: Extreme heat or cold can ruin the paint’s consistency. It’s best stored between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. Clothing: Clothing can attract pests and develop mold or mildew in a garage. If you must store it there, use airtight containers.
  8. Photographs: Photographs are vulnerable to moisture, which can cause mildew, and heat, which can fade images.
